Edward Loy Martin Middle Name: Loy State: Texas Last Place of Residence: Van zandt, Texas Age:96 Birth Date: 20 Oct 1914 Death Date: 24 Mar 2010

Edward L. "Pete" Martin, devoted husband, loving father, and grandfather and encourager to everyone he met in life, went to be with his Lord and his adorable wife, Roberta, who was waiting for him at heaven's gates at 3:40 p.m. on March 24, 2010.

He was born on Oct. 20, 1914, in a "little ol' shack" in Van Zandt County, to Johnny Marvin Martin and Eula Chrisman Jones Martin. He attended school in Van, until he decided to go to work in the oil field and marry the love of his life, Roberta Brown. They were married on Dec. 23, 1932, in Van, in the home of his aunt and uncle, Dempsey and Zenia Howell. They then moved to the Martin place that was located on what is now Highway 16. He went to work for The Pure Oil Co., until he decided to "go west," and go west he did. By then the family had added two daughters, Myrna Loy and Wanda Jean. They moved to eastern New Mexico and he went to work for Phillips Petroleum Co., and added another daughter, Bertie Ann, to the family. He then transferred to Andrews and added another daughter, Patricia Kay, to the family. He spent the next several years in the Andrews/Fullerton oil field. While there, he was instrumental in organizing and building the Fullerton Baptist Church, where he was song leader, deacon, maintenance and whatever-needed man. After transferring to Florida with Exxon Co. for a few years, he retired, and moved back to his hometown of Van, where he became a member of The First Assembly of God. He was a great witness for the Lord, hardly ever meeting a stranger, and always asking if they knew the Lord.

For several years, he augmented his income with small plumbing jobs. However, he usually did it for free or a very nominal charge. He would tell everyone he was doing this for "his little ol' widow ladies." Roberta knew that meant he did not charge, but she never complained, that is, not too much. He also loved his garden, especially his tomatoes. It was nothing to find him on his knees in the garden praying and telling the Lord, "I've planted it; now it is up you." It never failed to work, as when canning time came, there was plenty to give away, or can or make his wonderful soup, or anything with tomatoes. Another one of his favorite pastimes was going to the grocery store, where he would just ride up and down the aisles on the grocery cart meeting and talking to people. Everyone who knew him could tell that he loved the Lord with all his heart and soul. His motto was, "It is well with my soul." He and Roberta were married for 76 years and eight months.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Roberta; his daughter, Wanda Davis; two grandsons, Bradley Wright and Larry Jackson; his mother and father, Johnny and Eula Martin; two brothers, Lawton and D.O. Martin; and a sister, Rosa Bell Jacobs.

"Pa," as he was called by his family, was a great patriarch, and his prayer before meals will have to be done by someone else. He will be truly missed, and everyone is looking forward to a great reunion in heaven with him and all those who have met him there.

He is survived by one sister, Hazel Norene Mazetta; his daughters, Myrna Loy and husband Carl Hughes of Canton, Bertie Ann Abdel-Hafiz of Ben Wheeler, and Patricia Kay and husband Phil Eichorst of Chandler; grandchildren, Darla Gay Wright, Jerry Wayne Marks, Tracie Lynn Jackson, and Kari Ann Jackson; great-grandchildren, Justin Wayne Marks, Julito Edward Cano, Jonathan Boling, Shelby Elizabeth Boling and Bradley Chase Lloyd; great-great grandson, Jaxson Wayne Marks; and several nieces and nephews, as well as numerous friends.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 27, 2010, at First Assembly of God Church in Van with the Rev. Brad Williams and the Rev. Kendall Houston, his nephew, officiating. Interment will be at Union Chapel Cemetery on Texas Highway 110, Smith County, under the direction of Hilliard Funeral Home, Van.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of East Texas, 4111 University Blvd., Tyler, 75701.

Pallbearers will be James Hoskins, Bradley Lloyd, Corky Ruckman, Paul Martin, Dean Jarnow, Jerry Marks and Phil Eichorst. Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Dean, Carl Hughes and Billy Ray Childress.
