Thomas Applegate was living in Coganhouse Township, Lycoming County, when he enlisted in the army on August 1, 1864, as a substitute for Albert W. Curtis. He served at the rank of private with Co. C, 87th Pa Inf, until discharged honorably June 29, 1865. A sawyer by stated profession, he stood 6' 1" tall and had brown hair and blue eyes. The 1880 census for Humboldt County, California, shows he was then a railroad worker. Apparently he never married.
