Peacetime Medal of Honor Recipient. He entered the US Navy at Boston, Massachusetts and served as a Seaman. His citation reads "On board the USS Kearsarge at Shanghai, China, 23 January 1875. Displaying gallant conduct, Dempsey jumped overboard from the Kearsarge and rescued from drowning one of the crew of that vessel." He was originally interred in Odd Fellows Cemetery in San Francisco, CA. That cemetery closed down in 1933 and most of the burials were reinterred in Greenlawn Memorial Park in a mass grave unmarked in a section now called Odd Fellows section. All of the headstones from Odd Fellows Cemetery were destroyed.
