On September 18th, 1967, while returning to the Arizona State Prison from a court hearing, Corrections Officer Jim Stiner was overpowered and murdered by an inmate he was transporting.

Prior to his employment with the Arizona Department of Corrections, Officer Stiner had served a total of 30 years in the Army, Navy, and Air Force, retiring from military service with the rank of Master Sergeant.

He was buried in his hometown of Chandler, Arizona, with full military honors.
