Richard was killed at work. He worked as a coal miner, a notoriously cruel taskmaster. 200 good men died on May first, 1900. This was the first coal disaster of the new century. Many more would follow. Avondale and others preceeded this one but Scofield was the largest to date. Between the two Utah towns, Winter Quarters and Scofield the total population was about 1400. Imagine, suddenly 200 wage earners and family men are dead! A black day indeed.
