On October 13, 1768 Marshall married Martha Holme, daughter of Jane (Morgan) and John Holme. They had 5 children: Elizabeth, Morgan, Samuel, Alexander, and Enoch Cadwalader Edwards.
During the Revolutionary War, Marshall served in the Second Battalion of Philadelphia County in 1775 where he held the rank of Captain. He then was an officer in Col. Robert Lewis' Pennsylvania Battalion of the Flying Camp (1776). In 1777 he served in the Philadelphia County 3rd Battalion under Col. Benjamin McVeagh. From Aug. 14-Dec. 29 1777 he was Pay Master of the Philadelphia County Militia. He died February 1778 'in a manner, in the service of his country' (Rev. Samuel Jones) of unknown causes, leaving his five children orphaned, as their mother Martha, had died the previous year. He was 31 years old. The Rev. Samuel Jones of Pennepack Church became guardian for the children and petitioned Congress in 1782 to obtain the childrens' estate. See also: Abstracts of Phila. County Wills 1777-1790 Page 20. R 115
