David Brownlow Andrew Ledgerwood was one of seven children born to James Lowerentry Ledgerwood (1833-1905) and Marganner (Hansard) Ledgerwood (1835-1911). David's father and uncle were with the 3rd Tennessee Infantry, Union Army and later fought in the Spanish-American War. David met Sarah Jane Burkhart, a daughter of Morgan T.Burkhart, and they began to court, then wed on Aug 10, 1873. Their union produced eight children: Dan P.,b. July 24, 1874 (died Sept 20, 1880), Ulysis Sherman,b. 1876, Rodrick Roscoe,b.Mar 13, 1880, Dora H.,b. July, 1882, Voorhees, b.May 1886, Undine H., b.Apr 1892, Elva Acte b.Sept 1894 and Vernon Clyde, b.June 1898. All of the children were born in Union County and the family lived in Maynardsville, Union County, Tennessee, until at least 1900, then moved to Knox County in time for the 1910 Census.
