Sarah Jane Burkhart was b.Oct 25, 1857 to Morgan Tennessee Burkhart, (1831-1902) and Mary Elizabeth (Wilkerson)Burkhart, (1834-1870) of Maynardville, Union County, Tennessee. It was the eve of the War Between the States when Sarah was born, and when she was just age 4, her father went off to fight for the Union Army with the 1st Tennessee Volunteers, Cavalry, Co.C. He returned home in 1864 and she gained three more siblings by 1868. Tragically, her mother died on Christmas Eve, 1870. Her father mourned her loss and did not remarry until 1874. Sarah had met David Brownlow Andrew Ledgerwood, also of Union County, whose father, James Lowerentry Ledgerwood, had been a Captain in the 3rd Tennessee Infantry. I wonder if the young couple met via their father's connections. At any rate, they fell in love and married on Aug 10, 1873. Their union produced eight children: Dan P. b July 24, 1874, (d.Sept 20, 1880), Ulysis Sherman A. ,b.1876, Rodrick Roscoe, b.Mar 13, 1880, Dora H., b.July 1882, Voorhees, b.May 1886, Undine H., b.Apr 1892, Elva Acte, b.Sept 1894 and Clyde Vernon, b.June 1898. All were born in Union County, TN. Due to their unusual names, I hoped it wouldn't be too difficult to find the children in Find A Grave. I've located five of the children in a couple of counties in Tennessee, but that is all for now. I'd appreciate anyone having any further information on Sarah and David's daughters or their children contacting me. Both Sarah & David remained in Maynardville and were buried at Hansards Chapel Cemetery when they died. Sarah passed on Apr 20, 1918. David followed just under 10 years later on Mar 18, 1928. Their little boy, Dan, is buried there along with David's parents, James and Marganner (Hansard) Ledgerwood.
