"Death of an Old Pioneer - Mr. James Smith, of the 12th con. of West Wawanosh, passed away on Saturday last, in the 77th year of his age. Deceased who was well known and highly esteemed was among the first settlers of township, having settled on the farm where he died in 1857, and by his thrift and industry secured for himself and family a good home. For many years past he had suffered from rheumatism, but his health was otherwise good till a few months ago. He was taken ill with stomach trouble and despite the efforts of the best medical skill, he grew gradually worse, till death relieved his sufferings on Saturday. He was a man who enjoyed the confidence and respect of the whole community, and his widow and family have the sympathy of all in their bereavement."
