HARTFORD, May 8 (AP)—Austin Dunham Barney, retired board chairman of the Hartford Electric Light Company, a former State Senator and a founder of the University of Hartford, died today at the age of 74.
A 1918 graduate of Yale and a 1922 graduate of the Yale Law School, Mr. Barney became counsel for Hartford Electric in 1924. In 1936 he was named a vice president.
Ten years later Mr. Barney became company president and in .1951 board chairman, a post from which he retired in 1964. In 1950, he had become president of the Connecticut Power Company.
A two‐term State Senator, Mr. Barney represented the Fifth District in 1933 and 1935. A Farmington resident, he also served as chairman of the Farmington town council.
The University of Hartford, which he helped found, renamed its School of Business and Public Administration after him last year.
Mr. Barney was a former director of the United States Chamber of Commerce and of the National Industrial Conference Board. He had served as a director of the Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection Insurance Company, Hartford National Bank and Trust Company, Connecticut General Life Insurance Company and Farmington Savings Bank, and was also a director of Hartford Hospital.
