Dorothy Pauline "Lena" Degenhart Kells was the fourth of five children born to Joseph and Margretha Wucherpfennig Degenhart (changed from Degenhardt), German immigrants. Her oldest brother was Joseph Christoph and her younger sister was Elizabeth Anne (Anna). Two brothers died young from eating rat poison. She was baptized at St. Bruno's Church in Pinckneyville, later lived in Franklin Co, IL, and then in Cimarron, Gray Co, KS. She lived for a time in Haskell County and Garden City in Finney County, Kansas. She married William Alonzo Kells 28 Jan 1895 in Santa Fe, Haskell Co, KS. Children were Ralph (died young of mountain fever), Clarence James "CJ", Elmer (died young), Edgar Christopher "Ed", Augusta Mae Kells Buddenhagen, Lillie Belle (Lillian) Kells Bruce Erbland Carnegie and Arthur William "Art" Kells. She moved to Parsons, Labette Co, KS about 1917 where she lived until her death 14 Apr 1951 from cancer.
