US Congressman, Author. A 1799 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he studied law at the University of Pennsylvania and was admitted to the bar in 1804. He would serve eight terms as a Democratic-Republican Congressman from North Carolina, from 1807 to 1813, from 1817 to 1823, and 1825 to 1829. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1828, he was a department clerk in Washington, D.C., at the time of his death. He was also the author of 'Blackbeard', an 1824 comedy about the infamous North Carolina pirate. He is considered to be the first native North Carolinian to write a drama about a local subject.
