Sam was a farmer when he lived in Indiana Co, PA. He cut timber and worked in the woods at Hickory Kingdom, Clearfield Co, PA. It is said that he was a very good violin player. He went to Texas for a time leaving his wife and children in PA. (Is this him? Texas 1880 Federal census has S. R. Burkey, Houston County.) Family members say he always spelled his name Burkey and that is the way it is on his death certificate. Tombstone has Berkey. His death certificate has father and mother born in Westmoreland, PA, informant was Charles Burkey, Sabula, PA. Sam left his land and cabin to Mary Hoyt Berkey. (Bio taken from Eileen Jenkins)
