A Civil War veteran, he enrolled in Carlisle, Cumberland County, April 20, 1864, as an unattached man with the 7th Pa Reserves (36th Pa Inf), at the rank of private. Captured at the Wilderness May 6, 1864, and sent to Andersonville Prison where he died from chronic diarrhea. He has a large memorial stone at Chestnut Grove United Methodist Cemtery, Carroll Township, York County, PA, and is beside his parents.
