Sanford enlisted in the New York regiment during the Civil War. At Gettysburg, he was wounded in the ankle, taken prisoner, and subsequently released after a prisoner exchange. The following May he returned to active duty, and was captured after the battle of the Wilderness.

Sanford died in prison of scurvy at the notorious Andersonville prison in Georgia.

Sanford married LUCETTA HINDS SMITH (b. 18 Feb 1838, Exeter, Otsego, NY; d. July 21, 1911).
