Civil War Soldier - Dies at Andersonville

A list of deaths from Andersonville Prison show Isaac Baker, son of Joseph, on its rolls. He enlisted August 10, 1863 at Somerset, Pulaski Co., KY, in Company H, 1st Regiment of the Kentucky Cavalry Volunteers, giving his age as 20*. His term was for three years. Isaac was reported missing in action near Philadelphia, Tennessee on October 20, 1863. The regiment was in action there and then. He must have escaped for he is listed as captured again at Maryville, Tennessee, November 20, 1863. He was first sent to the notorious prison at Belle Island, Richmond, Virginia, December 1, 1863 then transferred to the "death camp", Andersonville Prison, Georgia, February 14, 1864; admitted to the hospital on April 14, died April 15, 1864 (The dates found in prison documents, of April 14, and 15 as date of death are later than the burial record of April 5th. In my opinion, the burial date is in error and should read 15th) The first prisoners to reach the stockade were 600 men from Belle Isle, sent on February 14, 1864, so Isaac must have been among them.

Another son of Joseph and brother of Isaac, Silas, was also listed as a prisoner at Andersonville, but lived to return home.

NOTE: *Issac was actually 16 at time of enlistment and this correspondes with the memories as told by my family as the death of Isaac caused a great rift in the Baker family.
