Edward R. Center (b. 1831/32 IL; d. 1 Sept. 1864 at Andersonville Prison, Andersonville, GA) married on 19 October 1854 Irena T. Lumpkin (b. 19 Oct. 1830 TN; d. 24 Apr. 1915 OK) at her father William L. Lumpkin's house in Bell County TX.

From Irena's Civil War Pension file, we learn several pieces of information. Edward and Irena were married in her father's Bell County TX house. Irena was the daughter of William L. Lumpkin (b. 25 November 1806 TN; d. 13 March 1890 TX) and Hariet/Hariat/Harriet Moore. See the memorial for W. L. Lumpkin at this URL:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Lumpkin&GSiman=1&GScid=6892&GRid=50411037&

Edward and Irena had these children:

1. John A. Center b. 14 November 1856 TX
(affidavit by S. L. Redding and per Claim For Increase of Widow's Pension 18 March 1866, Irena resident Logan County)
2. Richard A. Center b. 23 July 1860 IL
(affidavit by Nancy Jane Russell)
3. Susan H. Center b. 23 December 1861 IL
(affidavit by Nancy Jane Russell)

Edward served and died as a Union private in Company K, Regiment 115 IL Infantry during the Civil War. He was a prisoner of war at Andersonville Prison, where he died of dysentery 1 September 1864. Edward is buried in the Andersonville National Cemetery. His headstone is number 7502.

The pension file shows that Irena pursued her widow's pension while living in IL. Her post office address was Atlanta, Logan County , IL at the time that she received her pension certificate and on her application for pension increase, dated 15 March 1866. She also applied for an increase from Logan County IL on 24 September 1866. The 1865 Logan County IL state census shows who appears to be Irena's father, listed as Mr. Lampkin, next door to W. R. Center, Edward's father.
Edward's parents, Willard R. and Susan E. (UNKNOWN) Center lived in Menard County in 1860. After Willard's death in 1879, Edward's mother lived with son Joseph R. Center and family in Eminence, Logan County, IL (source: 1880 federal census). You can see a map that shows Atlanta and Eminence and is on this URL: http://www.rootsweb.com/~illcghs/maptown.html .
Various people vouched for Irena and/or the births of her children. William H. Center and Adeline Center, siblings of Edward, said that they witnessed the wedding of Irena and Edward. ____ said that he witnessed the birth of John A. Center, who was born in TX. Nancy J. Russel, who lived next door to the Centers in the 1860 Menard County IL census, vouched for the IL births of Richard Austin Center and Susan H. Center, who were born in IL.
By 1880, Irena was back in TX with her three children, and her father William was also in her household. By 1890, she lived in Bell County TX, according to the Veterans Schedule that does not list her children or her father. Her father does not appear in the 1900 census. It appears as if he had died by this time. There is a findagrave headstone for W. L. Lumpkin in Williamson County TX with this information: born 25 November 1806 and died 13 March 1890. See http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Lumpkin&GSiman=1&GScid=6892&GRid=50411037&. In the 1900 and 1910 federal censuses, Irena is living with her son John A. Center in Killeen, Bell County, TX. After 1910, she went to OK, where she died in Purcell, Cleveland County, OK in 1915. She is buried in the Lexington Cemetery in Lexington, Cleveland, OK.
