Ira Cook was born on October 18, 1856, to Mordecia Hanes Cook and Mary Scott in Putnam County, Ohio.

He married Malinda Elizabeth Craig on July 4, 1886, in Falls City, Richardson County, Nebraska.

Ira and Malinda Cook were the parents of John David Cook, Samuel Morticia Cook, and William Stewart Cook.

Malinda died in 1894, leaving Ira alone to raise their three sons. It is said that Ira and his sons did not have a good relationship with one another.

Ira Cook is found in the 1920 Census living with is youngest son William Stewart Cook in Table, Dawes County, Nebraska.

In the 1930 Census Ira Cook is listed as an inmate at the Norfolk State Hospital for the Insane. It is thought that he suffered from dementia and became too uncontrollable for his son and daughter-in-law and was committed to the hospital.

Ira Cook died on October 13, 1932, and is sadly buried on the grounds of the Norfolk State Hospital for the Insane.
