On December 22, 1863 he enlisted in Company F, 13th Illinois Cavalry. He mustered in on January 20, 1864 at Camp Butler, Springfield, Illinois. His rank was listed as Com Sgt. On the enlistment papers, his residence is shown as Tamaroa, Perry County, Illinois and his nativity as Greene County, Illinois. He died of disease on February 25, 1865 at Pine Bluff, Arkansas.


Removed from Carrolton cemetery in October 1888 with other Yates family members.
