John Johnston dies after a long illness.
John Johnston, a colored man, who has lived in the Lake Ida community for many years, and for the past three months has been a patient at Mercy Hospital, passed away there last Sunday morning at one o’clock. Death was due to diabetes. Gangrene developed and about two months ago his right limb was amputated, but even then he gradually failed.
22 years ago Mr. Johnston came here as a helper with the John C. Ames family, summer visitors, And ever since has lived in the Ida community, where by his friendliness and good nature he had won many friends.
The deceased was born in the state of Delaware June 24, 1861, and died at the age of 66 years, three months and 28 days. He had been married at one time.
Funeral services were held from Anderson’s chapel Sunday, conducted by Reverend J. R. Davies of the Methodist church. The Methodist choir furnished music. That Mr. Johnston was a man of many friends was attested by the exceptionally large attendance of friends from Ida. Interment was made in the Ida cemetery (Lake Charley). The pallbearers were Charles Christopherson, Henry Grosenick, Carl Erickson, Julius Krohnfeldt, Lars Lee and J. W. Erickson.
