Genie was in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's and was stationed at Wartburg, Tennessee, USA. He was in the same unit with his younger brother Frank.
He was a carpenter and farmer in his younger years in Tennessee. He lived for a short time in Ohio (after his stint in the Civilian Conservation Corps) along with several relatives who moved there for work. He later relocated to Indiana and worked for over 20 years at Richardson Rubber Company.
Genie was a quiet man, so when he had something to say we all listened because it was probably important. He was kind but stern and loved his family fiercely. The photo depicts him perfectly. In his retirement he was always in his Osh Kosh overalls with a dress shirt, fedora and wing tipped oxfords finished off with his beloved navy blue cardigan and heavy oak cane. He spent his days walking around the neighborhood, visiting and sitting on the porch whittling. When anyone asked what he was making, he'd say "a mess."
