CARMEL, CAL - Jacqueline Smith Cagwin was born in Rockport, Massachusetts to Martha Rondelle and Howard E. Smith, a National Academician who lived in Carmel and was one of the founders of the Carmel Art Association.

She married Lieutenant Leland G. Cagwin in May of 1941. They met in Carmel and married shortly after their first date at St. John's Chapel, Monterey, and within weeks they were stationed at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii where she and her husband were present during the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Jacky was evacuated and spent the next four years in Carmel with her family until Leland returned from Guadalcanal as a Major.

They were assigned to Ft. Benning, Washington D.C., where her husband graduated from the General Staff College in 1948. He then went off to Korea, and again "Jacky" as her friends called her, came back to Carmel to raise their three children by herself. When he returned they all went off to Paris for three years where she attended the Cordon Bleu School of Cooking and went to a ball at the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles.

By 1960 they were living in Ft. Bragg, North Carolina for a short tour and then onto MacDill Air Force Base in Florida during the Bay of Pigs. The final four tours were Ethiopia, California again, Maryland and finally, Germany.

Her years with her husband in all of the various countries, she spent a total of 33 years as an army wife, and during those years she also spent most of them as a Red Cross volunteer wrapping bandages for the lepers in Ethiopia earning a Red Cross pin. After retirement, she wrote a book "The Extraordinary Life of an Army Wife" which highlighted her many adventures.

She was married to Major General Leland G. Cagwin for 64 years. He and their son, Timothy D. Cagwin predeceased her. Her sister, Jeanne Logan and younger brother, Howard E. Smith Jr. have also predeceased her. She is survived by her daughter, her son, his wife and two grandchildren.

Jacky loved art, swimming, golf, movies, sailing and seafood. She was a member of St. John's Chapel, the Beach and Tennis Club, and MPCC.

She will be buried at West Point with her husband. The service is at St. John's Chapel in Monterey at 11am, Apr 12. Please make all donations in memory of Jacqueline S. Cagwin to the Red Cross of Carmel. Published in Monterey Herald on April 10, 2010
