The First Bishop of the Diocese of Malindi, Kenya, Monsignor Francis Baldacchino OFM. Cap., died at age 73, during the night of Friday, October 9, 2009, at Mater Dei Hospital in Tal-Qroqq, Msida, Malta, where he was recovered a month earlier.

Born in Marsa, Malta, on July 6, 1936, Bishop Baldacchino joined the Order of Franciscan Friars Minor Capuchins on September 20, 1953, professed on September 26, 1954, and was ordained to the priesthood on March 18, 1961, at 24 years of age.

A dedicated missionary, he worked for 35 years in Kenya between 1974 and 1998, when he was transferred to the Capuchin Mission in Cuba. Undergoing further studies in Rome and later in Spain, on June 2, 2000 Pope John Paul II appointed Friar Francis as the First Bishop of the newly erected See of Malindi, Kenya, Metropolitan to the Archdiocese of Mombasa, receiving his episcopal consecration on the following September 2, from Cardinal Jozef Tomko assisted by Msgr. Paul Darmanin OFM. Cap., Bishop of the Diocese of Garissa, Kenya, and Msgr. John Njenga, than Archbishop of Mombasa.

During his active missionary life, Friar Francis focused his attention on the southern area of his diocese, mainly in Mpeketoni and Lamu, and assisted health projects and the formation of a local Christian community. Between 1982 and 1988 he also served as superior of the mission and invested his energy in the formation of Kenyan Capuchins.

He did not live however, to see the results of his final mission - the arrival of the Cloistered Poor Clares from Uganda in the monastery he had just succeeded in completing. His medical condition led him to Malta on September 1, which led to his hospitalization.

On Monday 12, at 7.30 pm., a funeral wake for Bishop Baldacchino was held at Floriana's Capuchin church for which the public was invited to attend. On Tuesday, October 13, his body was laid out in state at the Capuchin convent of Floriana, from where a cortege started to St. John's Co-Cathedral at Valletta, where solemn funeral Mass took place at 2 pm., presided by Cardinal John Njue, Archbishop of Nairobi.

The clergy of the Diocese of Malindi in Kenya, the religious men and women as well as the local Christians celebrated during the same hour a Requiem Mass for the Bishop at St. Anthony's Cathedral. Bishop Francis was laid to rest at the Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery in Paola, inside the vaults of his brethren, the Maltese Capuchin Province, in accordance with his wishes. At a later date, in November 2011, his remains were however exhumed and transferred to the Capuchin crypt of Floriana.
