John McCumisky (also spelled McCummiskey) was born in 1832 in Dublin, Ireland and died between 1900 and 1910. He married Mary Horan (born 1842)in 1850 and had 10 children. In 1864 he was paid $600 to be a substitute soldier for a wealthy New York businessman and served in the 18th New York Cavalry during the Civil War. He used the money to buy a blacksmith shop in Jamaica and later Far Rockaway, New York.
