He was born on June 2, 1918 in Jericho, Arkanas to Doctor (Doc) and Lillie Baker. He was the eighth of nine children. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He met Gladys Johnson at Patterson Field, Ohio while working as a Vehicle Operator and then joined in marriage on December 16, 1944. He moved to Detroit in 1945 where he worked several jobs; attended Wayne County Community College and eventually retired after 30 yrs as a welder for Chysler Corporation.
