"Joseph Steffey
Joseph Steffey, or Uncle Doc., as he is better known was born in Wythe County, VA 25th of September 1806. He came to this county in 1829 and worked at the wharf in Vincennes for John Snapp on flatboats, flatboats being a great business at that day. At the expiration of three years he returned to Virginia to assist in moving the family of his father, who came to this county in 1832, settling in Washington township. Mr. Steffey was married to Elizabeth Steffey, second daughter of Henry Steffey, Jan. 19, 1842. Mrs. Steffey gave birth to three children after which she died in 1847. Mr. Steffey was then united with Julia Gray, widow of William Gray, in 1850. Mr. Steffey's family was increased by three heirs by his marriage to Mrs. Gray, who are the pride of his declining years, or at least should be...Mrs. Steffey, the second wife of Mr. Steffey, died in 1854, after which time he has been a widower, his sisters keeping house for him, among whom is the good old Aunt 'Cretia. After the death of Mr. Ketron, his brother-in-law, which took place in 1865, Mr. Steffey has lived with his widowed sister. Mr. Steffey became attached to the Presbyterian Church in 1822, which yoke he has been borne with meekness, the reward which he expects to reap at no distant day in a better land. Uncle Doc, cast his first vote for Andrew Jackson..."
