OBITUARY :
LAST VETERAN DIES, AGED 97

Funeral For T. H. Shelton, Rocky Ridge, Will
Be Held Tomorrow.

THOMAS H. SHELTON, last surviving veteran of the Civil War in this county, died at his home near Rocky Ridge early Saturday morning. He was aged 97 years. Death followed an illness of about a week.

Formerly a resident of near Smithsburg, Mr. Shelton removed his residence to Frederick county in October, 1936. He had been making his home with his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Stella Shelton, between Ladiesburg and Keymar.

He was born in the Unionville neighborhood on October 15, 1840, and spent his boyhood days near Oak Orchard.

When the war between the states broke out, he enlisted in Company I. First Maryland Regiment, under Capt. Walter Saunders. When this company was discharged he re-enlisted in Company I of the Thirteenth Regiment. He served for nearly the entire four-year duration of the war, charging with the line of blue at Gettysburg. He did not see service at the battle of Antietam, having been taken prisoner at Harpers Ferry the day before. He also missed the battle of Monocacy.

He is survived by nine grandchildren, 27 great- grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will take place from his home Tuesday 10 a.m. with full military honors. Final services and burial at Bethel church Garfield at 11 o'clock. Three members of Francis Scott Key Post No. 11 Frederick and three member's from Francis X Elder Post No. 121 Emmitsburg. The American Legion will serve as pallbearers. A volley from a firing squad will be followed by taps at the interment in Garfield cemetery.

The funeral of THOMAS H. SHELTON, the last Civil War veteran in Frederick county, where he died, was held at 11 o'clock at Bethel church at Garfield, where interment was made.

Mr. Shelton was born in Jefferson, Md., October 15, 1840. He enlisted at the beginning of the war and was honorably discharged at the close.

He spent many years of his life at Smithsburg.

The American Legion Post of Emmitsburg and Frederick accorded Mr. Shelton last military rites.
