Orvel McCoy was the son of Samuel and Malissa Swisher McCoy. He and his siblings grew up in southern Indiana on a farm owned by his parents. By 1900, they were living in Indianapolis; however, they moved back to Monroe Co.

His love for the outdoors and adventure led him to move to Montana. For years he held the record for the largest bear killed while hunting.

He died while visiting his sister in Indianapolis in 1966. His siblings included: Oscar (1885-1947), Lonnie (1893 - 1949), John Henry (1896 - 1971) and Helen 1899-1971.

He was married to Carrie Stewart.
