Steven Curtis Welch of Elk City, KS, died Sunday, May 2, 2010, at his home. He was 60.

He was born November 29, 1949, in Lakin, KS. to Curtis and Margie Greenburg Welch and was raised in Elk City, KS, where he received his education. He later attended Independence Community College.

He enlisted in the US Army in 1968 and served as an Airborne Combat Medic, serving two tours in Vietnam.

Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Elk City and was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad in the Bridge Department. He also served as an officer for the Independence Police Department and the Lakin Sheriff's Department. Steve later operated a rock crusher for Midwest Minerals in Coffeyville, KS.

He married Connie Bryant Smith 1972 in Independence, KS. They were later divorced.

He married Etta Schroder Shears in 1981. They were later divorced.

In 1990, he married Viola Holloway Wilson. They were later divorced.

Steven was a member of the VFW and the American Legion.

Survivors include one son, Captain Nickolas Welch of Ft. Riley, KS; one daughter, Julie Welch of Tulsa, OK; his mother, Margie Welch of Elk City, KS; five sisters, Vickie Newman and Janie Winkleman of Independence, KS; Ruenae Fowler, Rosie Welch and Holly McElwain of Elk, City, KS; and ten grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his father.

Cremation will take place and a memorial graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 8, 2010, at West Liberty Cemetery west of Elk City, KS,
