Parents: Christian and Caroline Reitz

According to his obituary he was born at Einartshausen, Hesse, Germany, emigrating to the United States when he was age 16 to be with his brother who was already living in Illinois.

George and Bertha Gerlach were married November 14, 1866, in Washington Co., Wisconsin. They soon moved to Iroquois Co., Wisconsin, where they raised their family and lived the rest of their lives.

Bertha preceded him in death in 1903. December 19, 1906, in Iroquois Co., Illinois, George married Bertha's niece, Miss Lisette Gerlach. They lived in Gilman until his death in 1924.

George and his brothers, Henry Reitz and Adam Reitz, served in the Civil War, same company and regiment, Company B Unit 36 ILL US INF. They all enlisted on the same day, September 13, 1861.

Henry Reitz was killed OCT 8, 1862, at Perryville, Kentucky (Civil War Battle).

Adam Reitz survived the Civil War; he was discharged on May 1, 1863. He married Wilhelmina Schardt on May 16, 1863, and they had a large family (11 known children). Adam died May 4, 1902, in Furnas Co., Nebraska.
