Mary Bain was born to Christian Elizabeth Robertson and Charles Bain. She married William Brown Thornton on December 13, 1883 at the age of 20. Nine children were born to their union, only five survived infancy. All were born in Fraserburgh, Scotland except for Chrissie who was born in Saginaw, Michigan while Mary and husband were on business regarding the fishing industry. Their children were: James Norrie, Christina Norrie, Mary (Polly), Agnes Bain, and Jean Noble Thornton.

Mary, died in 1901 from complications from childbirth leaving William a widow with two adolescent daughters, a seven year-old son, five year-old son, and a newborn infant. She was 39 years of age.
