William Brown Thornton was born to Elizabeth Jessie Slessor and William Thornton. His father worked as a cooper, an occupation making wooden staved vessels, bound together with hoops and possessing flat ends or heads such as casks, barrels, buckets, tubs, butter churns, etc. Their residence was the Broadsea Farm House.

According to the 1901 census, William supported his family as a journeyman cooper, like his father. Their residence was 33 Castle Street.

William's wife, Mary, died in 1901 from complications from childbirth leaving William a widow with two adolescent daughters, a seven year-old son, five year-old son, and a newborn infant. She was 39 years of age.

Eight years passed before William married his second wife, Lily "Lil" Christie, December 29, 1909, in Aberdeen.

William's daughters, Christina and Agnes, migrated to America where they married and raised families. His son James, died at the age of 21 while serving in the Gordon Highlands Regiment, during World War I, in France.
