Capt. Richard Howe was a resident engineer for the Ohio Canal northern division around 1830. He resigned in 1850. He married Roxana Jones and they had seven children, one of which, Henry, became a member of the Akron Board of Education. Richard left Akron with a group of 350 people to guide their wagon train to California in search of gold in the 1860s.
