Blanche Smith, 92, of Brasstown, died Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009, in a Blairsville, Ga., care center. She was a native of Clay County, where she lived most of her life. She had worked for many years as a bookkeeper for Mountain Valley Creamery, Wayne's Feed Store, and retired from John C. Campbell Folk School. Blanche was of the Presbyterian faith. Her hobbies included reading and crafts. She was the daughter of the late Fred Otto and Mary Jane "Mae" Arrant Scroggs, and wife of the late Douglas H. Smith, who died March 22, 1987.
Surviving are two daughters, Patsy Sudderth and husband Jerry of Murphy and Belinda Walker and husband Earl of Brasstown; a sister, Wanda Hampton of Waynesville; a brother, John C. Scroggs of Clyde; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, with the Rev. Aud Brown officiating. Interment will be in the Scroggs Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Terry and Mike Hedden, Alan Mauney, Charlie Caldwell, Bob Byers and Lee Davis. The family will receive friends from 5-6:45 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, at Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, prior to the services.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials
be made in memory of Blanche Smith to the Scroggs Family Cemetery Fund, c/o Robert Caldwell, 495 Old House Drive, Brasstown, NC 28902. Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, is in charge of all arrangements.
