General was the son of Andrew Gooden and Catherine Gooden. He was educated in the Houston County School System. Early in life, he joined the Sandy Run CME Church in Bonaire, Georgia. He later joined Piney Grove Baptist Church in Kathleen, Georgia where he was Ordained as a Deacon.
He was married to Hattie Dumas Granville and they had 8 children.

2 Daughters: Evelyn White and Betty Granville.
5 Sons: General Granville Jr, Willie B. Granville, Hollis Granville, Johnny Granville, Roosevelt Granville.
2 Brothers: Andrew Gooden Jr and Claude Gooden.
13 Grandchildren, 3 Great Grandchildren.
Services were held Saturday, March 31,1979 at 2pm in the Sanctuary of Piney Grove Baptist Church in Kathleen, Georgia with Rev B.W. Chamber officiating.
