The state papers yesterday contained an account of the murder and suicide of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Halstead, who fomerly lived here, which occurred at Owosso Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Free Press, Halstead went to the room of his wife, who was employed in a hotel, and fired three shots into her body, killing her instantly. He then turned the weapon upon himself and blew out his brains.
The Halsteads were married at the court house this city, January 18, 1900, both giving their homes as Vernon township. His occupation at that time was farmer and he was 22 years old. Mrs. Halstead was Lizzie Stacey, aged 18, a step daughter of Samuel Licht, a wealthy farmer of Vernon.
The Halsteads lived here for a few years and their home was apparently an unhappy one. The wife claimed he did not support her and she tried to get washings to do and worked in the beanery to get needful supplies for herself and children. Halstead worked at cement work on the street and some private jobs. He laid his drinking and carousing to his wife's mismanagement of home affairs and they had a miserable home.
At last Mrs. Halstead sold off what household things she could and went to Owosso about June first, telling here that she was going to put the children in the Dorcas Home there and herself go to work in a hotel. This she seems to have done. Halstead followed here there and took the usual miserable man's weapon against his wife by claiming jealousy of her. Isabella County Enterprise dated 9 August 1907
