Virginia was the daughter of Illus Vernon Chattin and Thelma Belle Fox of Martin Co., IN. She was born in Missouri and then the family moved to Knox Co., IN in the 1920s. She attended Decker Chapel High School and graduated from the Good Samaritan Hospital Nursing Program in the late 1930's in Vincennes, IN. She married her husband, M. Paul Thomas, in 1945, and they adopted two children and raised them in Carroll Co., IN on her husband's family farm until 1958. They packed up and moved to Knox Co., IN where they farmed at R.R. 1 Oaktown. She was a member of the Emison United Methodist Church.
