Valentine John Churches was born 14 Feb 1846 in Oare, Wookey, Somersetshire, England and died 14 Jun 1890 in Providence Hospital, Seattle, King County, Washington of Typhoid Fever.

He was a soldier in the Civil War. He enlisted on 9/1/1864 at Denver, CO as a Private. On 9/1/1864 he mustered into "K" Co. CO 3rd Cavalry. He was Mustered Out on 12/31/1864 at Denver, CO. (Estimated enlistment date)

He was a married man, living on a farm near Golden, Jefferson County, Colorado in September of 1884 when he lost 4 children within a month due to the Diphtheria epidemic that was spreading across the country at that time. Apparently, he could not handle the sudden loss and, in 1887, left the family, never to be heard from alive again.

Research by Carolyn (Churches) Robson found an excerpt from Grand Army of the Republic, Golden, Colorado, dated 11 Aug 1894 - 'A note of thanks be tendered to John Churches for reimbursing T. H. Dodd, Post No. 3 of expenses incurred by this post for setting headstone to Comrade Churches' grave in Washington Territory'. John Churches was Valentine's father.
