Business Woman Born in Haines Falls in 1847
Funeral services were held Tuesday for Mrs. Emma C. Church of Catskill, business woman who had a number of friends in Poughkeepsie. The Rev. Andrew Hansen, pastor of Christ's Presbyterian church, officiated and burial was in Cairo cemetery. She was a member of the Catskill church.
Mrs. Church was born at Haines Falls, town of Hunter, Jan. 26, 1847. When she was a child, her parents moved to Cairo, where they resided for many years. Mrs. Church was married at Cairo, Aug. 25. 1880, and her husband died at Catskill Jan. 15, 1917.
Mrs. Church has a long and successful business career. At the age of 16, she went to Hudson to learn the millinery trade and a year later opened a millinery store in Cairo. In 1881, a year after her marriage, Mrs. Church rented a section of Hearn's store in New York city, where she conducted a millinery business, later moving to Fifth avenue. Ill health forced her to discontinue her business for a time. About 43 years ago, however, she and her husband took over the C. A. Rowell dry goods business in Catskill.
A niece, Mrs. A. F. Clark of Boston, about ten years ago became associated with Mrs. Church in the Catskill business, which was known as Church and Clark.
