My dad was working as a carpenter on a women's house. Her purebred poodle became pregnant by the mutt next door. She was giving the puppies away. My dad brought this little puppy home one night, but my mom told him that dogs weren't allowed in the apartment. The next day, dad took the puppy back to work with him. When he returned home that night, he told my mom that he had given the puppy back. She had already fallen in love with the little pup and was upset that he had given it back without consulting her. Little did she know, he was just playing a trick on her and the puppy was asleep under the car seat!

I had begged my parents for a dog for several years; Inky was a dream come true for me. We did everything together. She was so smart. She learned to do many tricks on command such as sit, lay down, roll over, beg, stay, and she played hide and seek as good as any other kid in the neighborhood. She also patiently let me dress her up in any costume I could think of.

One silly nickname I had for her was Rink-a-Dink. I used to play like I was a detective and she was my sidekick whose code name was Pumpernickel. My cat Fluffy's code name was Papoose! Don't ask me where I came up with that; I have NO idea!

I took her on adventures all the time. Once I walked 4 miles from home to a park by the Potomac River for a picnic with Inky. I took a backpack with food and water and toys for her. She was a trooper and walked all the way there with me, but on the way home, I felt her lagging behind and then the leash went tight. When I turned around, the poor little girl was just laying on the sidewalk and was so worn out, she couldn't go any further! I carried her all the way home.

Inky had a love affair with our living room bolster pillow. I won't share anymore of that story, but it was hilarious!

Inky was the first dog I ever owned. She was my best friend and constant companion throughout my entire childhood and early adulthood.

She had to be put down due to old age and associated health issues. Her loss was devastating to our family.

When we buried her, there was a light rain shower and then a beautiful rainbow appeared in the sky! I'll never forget it.
