Bernard McGowan, 77, Son of Pioneers, Dies in Stockton

Bernard McGowan, 77, the youngest of twelve children born to the late Mr. and Mrs. James McGowan, early day pioneers of Columbia, died in a Stockton hospital yesterday morning after a short illness. McGowan was the last member of his immediate family.

Born in Columbia July 26, 1868, he had spent most of his lifetime in Tuolumne County. Engaged in the lumber industry he had been employed by the Standard Lumber Company many years ago. He also worked in Minden and Carson City, Nevada, as well as in Nevada City and Siskiyou County.

His parents, the James McGowans came to Columbia from New York State in 1858. His father worked as a butcher for Jim McCormick in Sonora.

Mr. McGowan is survived by several nieces and nephews including Miss Mildred Engelke of Sacramento and Fred McGowan of Sonora. He was related to both the McGowan and Engelke families of Columbia and Sonora.

Tentative plans are for funeral services tomorrow morning at the Terzich Chapel with the Rev. James Gilmartin officiating, followed by committal in the Columbia City Cemetery.
