Mary was the daughter from the marriage of Thomas William and Martha Ann (Edwards) Griffith. Mary married Perry Washington Pier on 29 Jun 1873 in Clarke County, VA; she was 17 years old and Perry was 22. That marriage produced 14 children, with two dying as infants.

Family lore has it that Perry was not the easiest man to live with--in fact, was always just a 'nasty person.' This story must have had some truth to it because after Perry's Sr.'s death and subsequent burial in Clarke County, Virginia - Ebenezer Church and Graveyard (also known as Church of God and Cemetery) not a single family ever put a gravestone there on his grave, which has subsequently become "lost" many years ago. Additionally, immediately after Perry's funeral on 8 Mar 1908, Mary told all her children that she never wanted to be buried with her husband up there in Clarke County. Elizabeth's wish was granted by her family, because upon her death she was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery--beside her youngest child, Perry Washington Pier, Jr.
