Aaron Ladd was born circa 1832, in Newcastle, North Carolina (Wilkes County), son of Amos Ladd (1797-1881) and Nancy Felts (1808-1859). The 1850 Federal Census for Wilkes County, North Carolina shows Aaron, age 17, born in Wilkes County, North Carolina; living with his father, Amos, age 51, born in Virginia; and his mother, Nancy, age 42, born in Wilkes County, North Carolina. Living with them was Aaron's brother, Elijah, age 14; born in Wilkes County, North Carolina.
The 1860 Federal Census for Newcastle, North Carolina (Wilkes County) shows Aaron, age 28, born in North Carolina; living with his father, Amos, a farmer, age 60, born in Virginia; and is father's second wife, Sarah, age 48m born in North Carolina.

Aaron first married Julia (maiden name unknown). The 1870 Federal Census for Newcastle, North Carolina (Wilkes County) shows Aaron Ladd, age 40, born in North Carolina; and his wife, Julia, age 20; born in North Carolina. They were living in the home of Aaron's father, Amos Ladd, a farmer, age 70, born in North Carolina (should say Virginia). Two laborers were also living in the household, Bowers, age 21, George, age 21. The family was living next door to Amos' other son, Elijah, and his family.

Aaron second married Emelia R. 'Emily' Myers. The 1880 Federal Census for Somers, North Carolina (Wilkes County) shows Aaron Ladd, a farmer, age 47, born in North Carolina; and his wife, Emelia R., age 43, born in North Carolina. Living with them were three children: Laura, age 13; Dusory, age 12; and Leander, age 10; all born in North Carolina. Also living in the household was Aaron's father, Amos Ladd, age 83, a widower, born in Virginia. The family was living next door to John and Cynthia Casey who owned the land where Amos Ladd and other family members ultimately would be buried.
