Asa was killed instantly when the corning mill where he was working, at the Quaker Falls Powder Plant (owned by Grasselli Co.) in Lowellville, Ohio exploded on Thursday Nov. 22, 1923, at 7:07 in the morning. The blast could be heard for miles. A co-worker was severly injured and later died of his injuries. The mill was completely destroyed and the loss was estimated to be about $10,000.

A newspaper account of the accident, in the Youngstown Vindicator, said it was the fifth explosion to occur at the plant in the year 1923, an earlier one also killing two men.

Asa's son, Elmer Burton, also died in an explosion at the same powder plant, on March 4, 1921, at the age of 20.
