Aaron enlisted in Company I in the 118th New York Infantry during the civil war. When he was a solider, he contracted a serious illness. The army discharged him March 20, 1864, but he was so weak that he died from his illness shortly after getting home. Unfortunately, Acsah died around this time, too. Aaron's 2 sons by Lydia and 2 daughters by Acsah, were orphaned. They went to live with their grandparents, who took them first to Illinois and then to Iowa.
