He was a farmer by summer and spent winters teaching at 52 schools in Mercer & Summers counties. All of his 6 children graduated from Concord College, and his 3 daughters became teachers. He moved to Athens in 1916, where he continued to teach and became Principal of View Point school and later at Elgood JHS. He was a member of the Board of Education, the Town Council, the Masonic Lodge and the Baptist Church. He was also Director of the Bank of Athens.
