A SOUTH OWEGO WOMAN DIES JUST BEFORE REACHING THE CENTURY MARK
MRS. LAURA WAIT
Mrs. Laura Wait, widow of Jefferson Wait, and the oldest resident of Tioga county, died at 10 o'clock on Monday forenoon, Oct. 26 at the home of William Dunham, a relative at South Owego, aged 99 years, two months and fourteen days. Her funeral was held this forenoon at the M. E. church at Nichols, Rev. E. Laurence Martin officiating. The attendance was large. The burial was in the Nichols cemetery. Mrs. Wait was a daughter of Peter Osborn, and was born Aug. 12, 1826, near Goshen in Orange county. When she was six months old her parents removed to Osborn hill in Pennsylvania, two miles south of Nichols. Her father, before deciding to remove there came on horseback to that locality, which was afterward named in his honor, and picked out the land on which he wished to settle. He returned to his farm seven miles from Port Jervis and on Feb. 10, 1827, with his family and as many of his household goods as he could pack on to a sleigh, drawn by horses, set forth for the new home in the wilderness. The family reached it safely after an eventful journey. Here in this pioneer settlement Mrs. Wait's childhood and girlhood were spent. On April 6, 1856, she was married to Jefferson Wait and began housekeeping on her husband's farm at Wait settlement, now known as Waits. Here she spent the next 45 years of her life. Her husband died in July, 1897. She remained at the farm two years thereafter, and then broke up housekeeping to live with relatives.
Last August a unique celebration was held in honor of her 99th birthday. Eleven aged persons who were all friends of Mrs. Wait were invited to spend the day with her. The combined ages of the hostess and her guests were 1,003 years. A half-tone of this group, together with an account of the gathering, was published in the Gazette the day after the celebration.
Mrs. Wait spent the last year or more of her life confined to a wheel chair, having fractured her hip. Until she suffered this accident her health was of the best and she was as active physically as she was keen mentally. About two weeks ago she began to suffer intensely, and her death was not unexpected.
Mrs. Wait leaves one son, Geoge D. Wait, a prominent business man, of this village, and one daughter, Mrs. Alvah Mericle, of South Owego. She was a brother of Daniel G. Osborne, of Nichols, who is 86 years of age.
