Note: Per Glynn's book, "Bethany was credited for her bravery. She drove alone in her two-wheel buggy, from Dale County, Alabama to Goldsboro, North Carolina, through rough territory, to get some slaves her father had given to her. This was before the era of emancipation. Her family was considered weatlthy. This trip required sleeping out at night. For awhile I was baffled about the number of slaves that could ride in a small, two-wheeled cart. A historian friend pointed out that slaves always walked."
Bienville Parish records say Buck and Crockett Sumlin are children of Needham Sumlin and say Stephen and Bethany Grimes of Dale Co., Ala are grandparents. Means the Matilda had maiden name GRIMES. (Census has her b ca 1817 )
