James Warren Hartley

James Warren Hartley, son of James and Mary Hartley, was born on October 24, 1868, near Washington, Ill., and passed away on June 11, 1961, at the Blue Valley Lutheran Home in Hebron, Nebraska. Mr. Hartley was 92 years of age at the time of his death.

Mr. Hartley came from Illinois with his parents in a covered wagon at three years of age. They settled on a homestead near what is now Carleton, Nebraska. Nearly all of his life was spent in Thayer County.

On October 8, 1902, he was joined in marriage to Daisy Adams and resided on a farm near Carleton until 1920 at which time he moved to a farm near Chester. In 1945 Mr. and Mrs. Hartley moved to Hebron where they continued to live. Because of poor health Mr. Hartley came to live at the Blue Valley Home in August of 1960.

Mr. Hartley was able to continue working in his garden and with his flowers and yard until going to the Home. He greatly enjoyed this work. He attended the Methodist Church and received the sacrament of baptism in the Methodist Church.

He is preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and three brothers. Mr. Hartley is survived by his wife, Mrs. Daisy Hartley of the Blue Valley Home and by the four children of this union; Mrs. Zela Cozine of Redding, Calif.; Harold of Hebron; Leslie of Chester; Mrs. Doris Vieselmeyer of Chester. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two brothers, Charles of Julesburg, Colo., and Grover of Carleton as well as many neighbors and friends.

Funeral services were held in the Methodist Church Tuesday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Wm Doran in charge, interment in the Carleton Cemetery.

Music was furnished by Mrs. H.R. Killinger at the organ and Paul Harmon, soloist.

Pall bearers were: Jim Hartley, Merle Hartley, Doyall Hartley, Robert Hartley, Max Gausman, and Don Engel. Arrangements by Montgomery-Tibbetts-Cotter Mortuary.
