An 1841 advertisement for Dr. Brown in the form of a facsimile banknote. These early notes were often produced by the same engravers that made real banknotes. Dr. Brown used the other side of this note to write a receipt for services rendered to his patient. (Swanson archives, ex Jacob Giles Morris, Frog Run auction sale by Stack's Rare Coins lot 1039, ex Kraljevich, ex Hagen). This banknote is believed to have been a receipt written to Jacob Giles Morris in 1841 and remained in the Morris collection for 163 years until sold at auction in 2004. BZS collection.

Close-up of the lower portion of Dr. Brown's facsimile banknote. This gives a list of services offered and prices in 1841. It is interesting to note that a set of dentures provided by Dr. Brown cost $125, a sum very few could afford in the 1840s. They were most likely carved of ivory which required not only great skill but also a lot of time. It was not until the discovery of the Vulcanizing process in the 1851 by Charles Goodyear and the widespread use of Vulcanite as a denture base from the 1860s onward that the price of dentures reached a price affordable to many more people.

The reverse of the facsimile banknote produced for Dr. Augustus Woodruff Brown was used as a receipt. It is signed Brown & Allen which was John Allen another noted pioneer in the history of dentistry.

The transfer-printed lid for a pot which contained tooth powder marketed by Dr. Augustus Woodruff Brown (a rare unlisted pot lid, Greg Dean collection, www.Deantiques.com).
